Description
Aim 

The course provides the student with an opportunity to develop critical reading skills by exploring texts and terminology typically encountered in academic study and the student’s field of studies. The objective of the course is to develop skills, strategies and other resources the student will need to read discipline specific texts more effectively.

Upon successful completion of the course the students should be able
1) to read and understand discipline specific texts in English
2) to use reading strategies
3) to recognise various text structures and terminology
4) to identify different types of texts
5) to understand the structure of academic and scientific articles
6) to follow research in their field of study
7) to achieve the level B2 of the CEFR (the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

 
Contents 

Reading academic articles and other professional literature.

 
Previous studies 

Upper secondary school or equivalent.

 
Methods 

Group work. Exercises 36 h. Self-access assignments.

 
Requirements 

Active participation in classroom sessions.

The literature will be determined by the instructor.

Additional information 

An optional placement examination will be arranged on the Language Centre's make-up exam days. Students attaining a score of 80 % or higher on the examination will be exempted from the course. This standard requires a strong background in English and familiarity with terminology in main subject studies.
