The course provides the student with an opportunity to develop critical reading skills by exploring texts and terminology typically encountered in academic study and the student’s field of studies. The objective of the course is to develop skills, strategies and other resources the student will need to read discipline specific texts more effectively.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students should be able
1) to read and understand discipline specific texts in English
2) to use reading strategies
3) to recognise various text structures and terminology
4) to identify different types of texts
5) to understand the structure of academic and scientific articles
6) to follow research in their field of study.

The text types covered in the course include court judgments from the common-law jurisdictions and the European Court of Justice, legislation, contracts, scholarly articles and professional journals. The classroom work focuses on using terminological resources, analyzing and comparing cases, examining the language and structure of contracts, and developing reactions to current issues in the law.

Students should have completed at least one year of study in Law to provide them with necessary conceptual foundation for comparing legal systems.

Group work and exercises 36 h, independent study. Written final examination.

Active participation in the classroom sessions, daily reading assignments, essay.

The instructor will determine the literature.

Pass/fail based on (min. 80%) class participation.

An optional placement examination will be arranged on the Language Centre's make-up exam days. Students attaining a score of 80 % or higher on the examination will be exempted from the course. This standard requires a strong background in English and familiarity with terminology in main subject studies.
